Raw Beginnings And Foraging For Original Design

A confession. One of my (many) guilty pleasures as a grown woman is to be left alone on a beach or in the woods for a while - just to pick things up from the ground and have a good look at them... !

Having reached ‘peak driftwood and found object’ in Studio Outline recently, I’ve been photographing interesting textures on my travels, restricting the image to a small square to capture the essence of it. Often the abstract forms within these little snapshots will become new jewellery designs or they might help me work out the construction of new pieces.

In our digital world, imagery constantly finds us, and it may seem that creativity can be fed endlessly click by click: However what we view online is often the curated and perfected end product. The problem is already solved - we don’t get to experience that slightly raw messy beginning and the sense of potential. I used to feel as though everyone else had already done it better, bigger, glossier. Once I stepped outside the digital bubble, I began to notice the unexpected, imperfect beauty in nature and forgotten corners here and there - and the original thoughts and ideas started to flow.

By the way, this image is an old drain cover on a dusty pavement in Budapest - isn’t it stunning?!
